This one goes out to EVERYONE struggling with their perseverance in art.
I know how discouraging it is to spend hours, days, maybe even weeks on a drawing, only to post it on Tumblr and get less than 5 notes.
It’s extremely disappointing and makes us feel like the time…
I like to think that the notion of ‘work hard, do good and good things will come your way,’ also applies to art. Some artists seek fame and will do almost anything if only for a taste. Don’t sell yourself short by reverting to drawing in a style you don’t necessarily like, or can’t see yourself staying in for years to come, or for a fandom you may not enjoy.
Work hard to develop whatever style it is that you want to paint/draw in, even if it comes at the price of spending endless hours sobbing over the artwork of those you most admire and at times, equally envy. Encouragement should come from the desire to improve; if you focus on trying to become better at what it is you do, the notes, comments, and praise will surely follow. And best of all, it will all happen when you least expect it.
I can’t explain how wonderful it feels to draw and suddenly enjoy what you are doing because what you see on the page in front of you is exactly what you wanted, and all of it is courtesy of your hands and your hard work. All this, so that you can hate that exact piece of artwork in a week’s time. Nothing is more rewarding in art, than hating what you last drew. If you were constantly satisfied with the quality of your work, then surely you have not been improving very much, nor very quickly.
I wish artists received attention based on their skill and effort, but sadly this isn’t always the case and as unfair as this truly is, do not feel discouraged. The followers that you do have are usually some of the most loyal, most helpful and most wonderful people you will ever have the pleasure of drawing for and that is a feeling that is sometimes lost with a sudden high influx of notes, favs and comments.
Keep on struggling guys, because it is only a matter of time before you reach a place you’ve always wanted to be at, but make sure to appreciate all of those folks that helped you get there.
Oh and good night everyone ^^
